“The LORD has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said, “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do, and don’t live in dread of what frightens them. Make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble.” Is. 8:11-13 NLT
I don’t know about you, but all these conspiracy theories regarding COVID-19 are getting on my nerves. Seriously.
You have probably had your fair share as well, so I am not even going to mention any of them floating around right now. I am just going to tell you why I have a problem with conspiracy theories.
Apart from them being truly annoying and mostly ridiculous, they are also not biblical.
What am I talking about?
This part of Scripture:
Think about it. What do conspiracy theories do? They provoke fear and uncertainty – a mentality of “there’s something worse they’re not telling us!” It causes people to live in dread and be frightened.
So, why is God warning Isaiah against this way of thinking? Because He wants Isaiah, and us, to trust Him in all circumstances. To have faith in Him.
Fear, on the other hand, is the opposite of faith.
The kingdom of darkness operates by fear. God’s kingdom operates by faith. That is why Isaiah tells us that we should fear nothing but God. We should make Him holy in our lives.
What else do conspiracy theories do? They cause people to be stirred up emotionally to such an extent that they destroy properties, assault others and disregard authorities. All of which are not biblical behavior.
What worries me are those who back their conspiracy theories by some revelation that they had apparently received from God. Once again, it provokes fear and uncertainty, but not only that, it causes division and strive between God’s children, which is also not biblical.
Instead of preaching some conspiracy theory, why not preach God’s Word instead?
Why not remind us that God is near to all who call on Him in truth and that He will rescue us because He is the upholder of our lives? (Ps 145:18, Ps 50:15, Ps 91:14-16, Ps 54:4 ESV)
Why not cry out, in humility, for God to save us and to give us success in the battle against this virus? (Ps 118:25 ESV)
Why not remind the Children of God that they have a covenant with the Most High through the Blood of Jesus Christ? (Luke 22:20, Heb. 9:15,20, Eph. 1:7, Rev. 12:11, 1 Pet. 1:18-19, Eph. 2:13, Col 1:20)
Why not declare that His steadfast love never ceases and that His mercies are new every morning? (Lam. 3:21-23)
Why not comfort those who are sick with the truth that they are healed by His wounds? (1 Peter 2:24, Is. 53:5)
Stir up faith. Not fear.
The truth is, only God really knows where this virus came from and only He knows how to stop it. Are you going to trust that He is in control or are you going to live in dread because of some conspiracy theory?
I choose to trust God. He is my shield. (Ps 18:30)
May God bless and protect you.
